Doris Alder Barnes

Doris Barnes was a doctor’s daughter from Liverpool who went to France in 1916 as an ambulance driver with the First Aid Nurisng Yeomanry, an all-women volunteer unit. The FANY served with three armies at the Western Front: Belgian, French and British. At the end of 1917 she was sent to the South of France as a driver for one of the convalescent homes set up in the area for British military personnel, soldiers and nurses.
